3.(G) If the distance from Los Angeles to San Francisco is “D”, the total time for the round trip was
D/380 +D/420 = D/199.5
The average speed for the round trip was 2D/ (D/199.5) =399 m/hr, not 400 m/hr.

3.(H) If team “A” wins game one ,it must win three of the next six games to win the series. Number of ways for that is 6C3=20.
Team B must win 4 of the next 6 games to win the series. Number of ways it can be done is 6C4 = 15.
Out of 35 outcomes, 20 produce win for team A. Probability of winning = 20/35.
If it wins game 2, then probability of series win =5C2/ (5C2 + 5C4) = 2/3.
If it wins game 3, then p = 4C1 / (4C1 + 4C4) = 4/5.

3.(I) If a meteorite is at distance “y” from center of the earth and approaches with a velocity “v”, its acceleration is dv / dt = -g r^2 / y^2. r is the radius of the earth.
dv/dy = (dv/dt)/v; vdv = (dv/dt) dy = -g r^2 (dy/y^2)
v^2 = gr^2/y + constant.
v=0 when y=infinity => c=0.
v=sqrt((2g r^2)/y). Substitute y=r=200km. Answer = 11 km/s.

3.(J) Assume e^pi > pi^e => pi>e ln pi => pi / ln pi > e (=e / ln e).
For any “x”, (d/dx)(x / ln x) = (ln x -1)/((ln x)^2) which is positive for any x > e .
Since pi > e, the inequality is true. Thus, e^pi is larger.
e^pi = 23.14 pi^e = 22.46.

3.(K) V = pi * d * d * h/4 A = pi * d * h + pi * d * d /2.
Hold V constant. Solve for d in terms of V and substitute in equation of V to eliminate d. then differentiate A with respect to h, and find h for minimum value of A.
Alternately, eliminate h and differentiate A with respect to d or hold A constant and maximize V. Result is h=d.
Reason: Why cans are actually made with the ratio h/d>1 is to make them look larger.

5.(K) 3 dimensional visualization. Consider a sphere of unit radius enclosed by a cube. Each edge is two units long, diagonal of each face is 2 sqrt(2), and each internal diagonal is 2 sqrt(3). Thus, distance from corner to center of cube, and of sphere is sqrt(3). Let “R1” be the radius of the small sphere. Distance from starting corner to outer intersection of sphere and diagonal, the tangent spot is (1+sqrt(3))*R1. Taking R2 as radius of larger sphere, distance from starting corner to inner intersection, the other tangent spot is sqrt(3)-1. Therefore, the desired ratio R2/R1 = (sqrt(3)+1)/(sqrt(3)-1). Approximately 3.73205. This is almost sqrt(3)+2.

5.(L) Divide OC voltage by SC current. But measuring SC current would discharge battery quickly. Measure OC voltage and then connect known resistance R1 across battery terminals. Then measure V1. Internal resistance R = (V/V1-1)*R1.
If there is a potentiometer for R1, adjust it to make V1 half of V. Then R1=R.
If there is an ammeter, measure current through R1.
R=V/I-R1.

5.(M) The prob. that two people have different birthdays is 364/365. The prob. that three people have different birthdays is (364/365)*(363/365).
The prob. that “n” people have diff. Birthdays is
P=(364/365)(363/365)…..((366-n)/365).
When n=23, P=0.493. So for a group of 23 people, the prob. (1-P) that at least two have same birthday is slightly higher than 0.5.

10.(B) Let the digit unknown be n. The given number is 900+50+n=950+n. When reversed the new number is 100n+50+9=59+100n. Subtracting these two numbers we get 891-99n. The digits can be arranged in three ways or six ways. We have already investigated 2 of these ways. Now the remaining 4 ways. One of these is n95
100n+90+5=891-99n. n=4.

10.(C) -3,-1,1

10.(D) 91 or 362880

10.(E) No. A hexagonal pencil does not have 6 edges it has 8, if not sharpened-6faces and 2 small bases.

10.(F) Parallelogram

10.(G) In a regular chess board, there are 1296 rectangles altogether including 8/8 outer square.

10.(H) Four rungs only. Boat rises with the tide.

10.(I) The fourth oarsman can be chosen from the three who can row on either side in three ways. And so when this fourth oarsman is chosen, the four stroke side oarsman can be arranged 4! Ways. There are 3*4! Ways of arranging the stroke side.
Consider the bowside oarsmen. There is no choice of men here, as there are two bowside oarsman and the two can row on either side. These two men can be arranged in 4! Ways. Because, for each stroke side arrangement, any of the bowside arrangements is possible.
Therefore the total number of arrangements is 3*4!*4!=1728.

10.(J) Approximately 19 years.

10.(K) 0 to 9 places of decimals 2.71828 1828

10.(L) 26*25*4=15600. It is the result of dividing factorial 26 by (26-3)!
Generally speaking the number of permutations of n things if only r are taken at any one time is or n! divided by factorial (n-r)nPr

10.(M) 127, 255, 511.
This series is being built up according to the order where the actual term is equal to (2 ^n)-1, n being the number of terms.

10.(N) 773, 2753.
In this sequence we have to try all the combinations of mathematical operations we know until we find the order which satisfies this sequence. The order in this case is
Tn = 3Tn-1+2Tn-2
T7= 3(217) + 2(61)=773

10.(O) Neither. There is same amount in each.
a = amount of orangeade in glass at start
b = amount of orangeade first transferred
c = amount of orangeade second transferred
d = amount of lemonade transferred to orangeade
To show d= b-c

Time Amount of orangeade in glass
Start a
First transfer a-b
Second transfer (a-b)+(c+d)
Therefore a must equal the final amount after the second transfer
a= (a-b)+(c+d)
d = b-c

10.(P) 7. Make a vertical cut in the tree trunk and peel off the trunk to form a long rectangle. Across the rectangle draw 5 parallel lines to represent the jasmine and another parallel line for the rose. Now you will see 7 crossing positions.

10.(Q) 2420 feet
1100 feet/1sec = x feet/(11/5)sec
then x is 2420

10.(R) The farmer was pointing at the basket with 29 eggs. Chicken eggs were in the basket marked 23, 12 and 5. Duck eggs were in the basket marked 14 and 6.
23+12+5+40 chicken eggsw after the transaction and 14+6= duck eggs.
There were twice as many as chicken eggs as duck eggs, as the problem said.

10.(S) The first piee can be placed in any of the 64 squares. Now remains 63 squares for the second piece, that is to any one of the 64 positions of the first piece we can add the 63 positions to the second.
There are 64*63= 4032 different positions in which the two pieces may be placed on a draught board.

10.(T) This job can be done simply by opening up three links – the llinks of one section, aand joining the ends of the other four sections with them.

10.(U) 44cms
The safe moves forward twice the length of the circumference of one of the steel bars. This distance is (2*22*7)/7= 44cms.
(a) The motion forward caused by one revolution of the rollers if they were rolling off the ground.
(b) The motion forward of the centers of the rollers as they themselves roll forward on the ground.
The motion is 22cms in both the cases. Therefore total motion = 44cms

10.(V) 18- Rajiv scores 50 while Sanjiv scores 40, Sanjiv scores 50 while Vijay scores 40. Sanjivs scores 40 while Vijay scores (40*40)/50= 32.
Rajiv scores 50 while Sanjiv scores 40 and while vijay scores 32.
Therefore Rajiv can give 18 points to Vijay.

10.(W) Greatest: log2+log4
smallest log6-log3

10.(X) 4. Most people think the answer is 3 because it is easy to create an equilateral triangle with a tree planted on each corner. But of the land had just the right contours, a fourth tree might be planted in a valley or on a hill, forming a pyramid shape above or below the center of the triangle in a spot that would maintain the equidistance.

10.(Y) 71.4 metres. Sanjiv runs 1470 metres while Vijay runs 1400 metres. At the same rate Sanjiv runs 1500 metres while Vijay runs
(1500*1400)/1470= 1428.6 metres.
Hence Sanjiv should beat Vijay by 71.4 metres.

16(0) 11 seconds
There is an interval of 1 second between each stroke. If the clock strikes 6, there are 5 intervals. If the clock strikes 12 there are 11 intervals.

16(P) Nr.1 sees a white and a black hat in front of him. He cannot tell what hat he is wearing, so he keeps his mouth shut. If nr.1 saw two black hats, he would know that he was wearing a white hat. Because nr.1 does not say anything nr.2 knows that nr.1 must see a black and a white hat. Nr.2 sees a black hat and therefor he knows that he himself wears a white hat.

16(Q) First the farmer takes the goat across the river. He goes back to pick up the wolf. When he is across he leaves the wolf and takes back the goat. Back on the other side he leaves the goat and takes the cabbages with him. Then he picks up the goat and all three items are on the other side.

16(R) Ask the man which city he lives in. He will always point to village B.

16(S)3 cows, 41 geese and 56 chicken.

16(T) 6 meters 28 centimeters.
The outline of a circle is 2*PI*r. If you want a rope that is one meter above the ground rnew=r+1. So you need 2*PI*(r+1)-2*PI*r more rope.
So,
x=2*PI*(r+1)-2*PI*r
x=2*PI*r+2*PI-2*PI*r
x=2*PI
x=6.28
It does not matter what the radius of the circle is. You always need 2*pi more rope.

16(U) Mother is 40 daughter is 10

16(V) 1 sheep - 1 dog = 1 goat + 1 dog
1 sheep - 1 goat = 2 dogs
A sheep is 10 dinars, but what costs a goat?
The money they received for their camels is a square. And the decade of this square is odd (total money / 10 dinars), because they could not divide the sheep equally.
Now the interesting thing is that all squares with an odd decade ends on a 6. (162 = 256, 242 = 576). So a goat costs always 6 dinars.
10 - 6 = 2 dogs
So a dog costs 2 dinars.

16(W) A wins Gold
D wins Silver
C wins Bronze

16(X) First Bono and Edge = 2 minutes
Bono goes back = 3 minutes
Larry and Adam = 13 minutes
Edge goes back = 15 minutes
Edge and Bono cross again = 17 minutes

16(Y) Make a collection of marbles taking one from the first bag, two from the second bag, three from the third, and so on and so forth. Weigh the new collection and the weight in hundredths of a gram will tell what bag the heavier balls came from.

25(A) ABCDEF=142857 (the digits of the expansion of 1/7).

25(B) 149

25(C ) Assume there's such a positive integer x such that x/2=y and y is the reverse of x.
Then x=2y. Let x = a...b, then y = b...a, and:
b...a (y)
x 2
--------
a...b (x)
From the last digit b of x, we have b = 2a (mod 10), the possible values for b are 2, 4, 6, 8 and hence possible values for (a, b) are (1,2), (6,2), (2,4), (7,4), (3,6), (8,6), (4,8), (9,8). From the first digit a of x, we have a = 2b or a = 2b+1. None of the above pairs satisfy this condition. A contradiction. Hence there's no such integer.

25(D) Yes, there are two such pairs: (567, 567^2=321489) and (854,854^2=729316).

25(E) Because the water-lily doubles its size every day and the complete pool is covered after 20 days, half of the pool will be covered one day before that, after 19 days.
Conclusion: After 19 days half of the pool will be covered by the water-lily

25(F) It is obvious that the cork does not move relatively to the water (i.e. has the same speed as the water). So if the swimmer is swimming away from the cork for half an hour (up stream), it will take him another half hour to swim back to the cork again (down stream, where he reaches the cork at the moment it is passing the bridge). So in that one hour time, the cork has floated from 1 kilometer up stream to the bridge.
Conclusion: The water in the canal flows at a speed of 1 km/h.

25(G) Solution 1:
Fill the 5 liter jug. Then fill the 3 liter jug to the top with water from the 5 liter jug. Now you have 2 liters of water in the 5 liter jug. Dump out the 3 liter jug and pour what's in the 5 liter jug into the 3 liter jug. Then refill the 5 liter jug, and fill up the 3 liter jug to the top. Since there were already 2 liters of water in the 3 liter jug, 1 liter is removed from the 5 liter jug, leaving 4 liters of water in the 5 liter jug.
Solution 2:
Fill the 3 liter jug and pour it into the 5 liter jug. Then refill the 3 liter jug and fill up the 5 liter jug to the top. Since there were already 3 liters of water in the 5 liter jug, 2 liters of water are removed from the 3 liter jug, leaving 1 liter of water in the 3 liter jug. Then dump out the 5 liter jug and pour what's in the 3 liter jug into the 5 liter jug. Refill the 3 liter jug and pour it into the 5 liter jug. Now you have 4 liters of water in the 5 liter jug.

25(H) Note that it is a kind of trick question: the pillars stand next to each other. Which means that the cable goes 8 meters straight down and 8 meters straight up.
Conclusion: The distance between the pillars is zero meter.

25(I) First man 1 and man 2 walk across the bridge. This takes 2 minutes.
After this, man 1 walks back with the flashlight. This takes 1 minute.
Then man 3 and man 4 walk across the bridge. This takes 10 minutes.
After this, man 2 walks back with the flashlight. This takes 2 minutes.
Then man 1 and man 2 walk across the bridge. This takes 2 minutes as before.
In total: 2+1+10+2+2=17 minutes.

25(J) Each person paid $9, totalling $27. The manager has $25 and the bellboy $2. The bellboy's $2 should be added to the manager's $25 or subtracted from the tenants' $27, not added to the tenants' $27.

25(K) On a book shelf the first page of the first volume is on the "inside"

so the bookworm eats only through the cover of the first volume, then 8 times 1000 pages of Volumes 2 - 9, then through the cover to the 1st page of Vol 10. He eats 8,000 pages.
If the bookworm ate the first page and the last page, it ate 8,004 pages.

25(L) THREE FLOWERS:
rose, tulip, daisy

25(M) Almost all of it. Tie the ropes together. Climb up one of them. Tie a loop in it as close as possible to the ceiling. Cut it below the loop. Run the rope through the loop and tie it to your waist. Climb the other rope (this may involve some swinging action). Pull the rope going through the loop tight and cut the other rope as close as possible to the ceiling. You will swing down on the rope through the loop. Lower yourself to the ground by letting out rope. Pull the rope through the loop. You will have nearly all the rope.

25(N) 13. She could possibly take out 6 black left hand gloves and then 6 brown left hand gloves, the next one would have to be either the right hand or left hand match.
25(O) The kids row across. One comes back. An adult goes over, and the kid comes back. Both kids row across again, and one comes back. The other adult rows across and the kid comes back. Both kids row across again.

33.(A) 6. The man made 5 cigarettes from the 25 butts, smoked them, and then made an additional cigarette from the 5 butts that were left from the 5 that he made.

33.(B) 37.

33.(C) The doctor was the boy's mother.

33.(D) You have 1 chance in 17,100,720. The answer can be found by muliplying the chance of the first ball being any particular number, 1/30, by the chance of the second ball being any particular number, 1/29 (since one ball has already been removed from the basket), & then by 1/28, 1/27, & 1/26.

33.(E) The architect is Andy, the barber is Dave, the caseworker is Cedric, and the dentist is Brian.

33.(F) BALLOON. Some balloons contain helium, while a hot air balloon (used for transportation) carries a basket.

33.(O) This answer is for 2 weighings. The problem I originally had posted here was for 3 weighings, but since you can complete the problem with 2 weighings, I list only the most efficient method. Place 3 marbles on each pan. If they balance, remove the marbles from the pans, & place 2 of the remaining unweighed marbles on the pans, 1 on each pan. If 1 is heavier, it is the heavier marble, but if they balance, the remaining unweighed marble is the heavier 1. If your first weighing does not balance, remove the marbles from the lighter pan, & place 1 marble on each pan from the heavier pan. The heavier 1 is the 1.5 ounce marble, but if they balance, then the marble from the heavy pan from the first weighing that was not weighed in the second weighing is the heavy 1.

33.(P) There are 2 possible answers, both of which are almost the same:

Answer 1: Andy & Brenda walk together to the house (2 minutes), & Andy returns (1 minute). Carl & Dana walk to the house (10 minutes), & Brenda returns with the umbrella (2 minutes). Andy & Brenda walk to the house again (2 minutes).

Answer 2: Andy & Brenda walk together to the house (2 minutes), & Brenda returns (2 minutes). Carl & Dana walk to the house (10 minutes), & Andy returns with the umbrella (1 minute). Andy & Brenda walk to the house again (2 minutes).

33.(Q) There are 2 possible answers for this puzzle:

Answer 1: You ask 1 of the individuals what the other 1 would say if you asked him or her which door you should open to get to the coffer. In this case, you would open the other door.

Answer 2: You ask 1 of the individuals what the other 1 would say if you asked him or her which door is holding back the hungry lion. In this case, you would open this door.

33.(R) For the chart below, assume A = knave, I = knight, & O = normal.
A B C
A I O
A O I
I A O
I O A
O A I
O I A

The first condition & the last 2 conditions cannot occur because contradictions would occur. In 2 of the second, third, & fourth possibilities, the knight is A, the person who claims to love cats. You would be wisest to bet on A, as there is better than a 66% chance that that individual is a knight.

33.(S) All 4 individuals are knaves. The primary colors are red, yellow & blue for pigments, but for the spectrum they are red, green & blue. This was a tough puzzle if you didn't use reference aids - not many people know these things!

33.(T) 1-333. The reason why is because 200-299 each begins with a 2!

33.(U) There are 64 different possible outcomes, & in 9 of these, exactly 2 of the balls will be red. There is thus a slightly better than 14% chance that exactly 2 balls will be red. A much faster way to solve the problem is to look at it this way. There are 3 scenarios where exactly 3 balls are red:
1 2 3
R R X
R X R
X R R
X is any ball that is not red. There is a 4.6875% chance that each of these situations will occur. Take the first 1, for example: 25% chance the first ball is red, multiplied by a 25% chance the second ball is red, multiplied by a 75% chance the third ball is not red. Because there are 3 scenarios where this outcome occurs, you multiply the 4.6875% chance of any 1 occurring by 3, & you get 14.0625%.

33.(V) This problem can be solved algebraically: 10 (8k + 14l) = 510 and 12 (13k + 6l) = 492. You then isolate 1 variable in 1 equation, & substitute it in the other equation. Kips build 2 tors an hour, & ligs build 2.5 tors an hour.

33.(W) Pretend that A & B are the objects in the juggler's first hand, & C & D are the objects in the juggler's second hand. You thus start out as AB CD, & each step shows the result after each throw (note: some of the objects would not actually reach their destination in the steps in which they are shown arriving):

1. B ACD
2. BC AD
3. C ABD
4. CD AB
5. D ABC
6. AD BC
7. A BCD
8. AB CD

It would take a total of 8 throws to get the objects back into their original positions.

33.(X) The answer is CANTANKEROUS:
A. AROUSE (synonym of EXCITE).
B. KANT.
C. OUNCE.

33.(Y) 359. If you answered 358, you must remember that the fence must begin & end with a post, & dividing 1,432 by 4 leaves one end without a post.
